My thoughts

I honestly don't know how Mr Moberly does it! Each time he brings out a new book it is very different from his previous releases and I think: 'This is his best one yet!'

For this one, I especially liked it because it is set in my own area of Devon (with lanes as depicted on the cover being very familiar!) and even the subject of difficulties with unwanted, unreasonable planning applications is a familiar topic, (oh and walking a dog along those narrow but very beautiful lanes!)

As with all the author's superbly drawn characters and gripping plots, Honey Down The Lane doesn't disappoint ... and yes, this is his best yet!

About the Book
Kindred Spirits at Harling Hall
The first in a delightfully warm, cosy and romantic new series with a fantasy twist, for fans of the BBC series 'Ghosts'.

Can Callie give some needy ghosts their happy-ever-afterlife, while making Rowan Vale her own forever home?

When cash-strapped single mum Callie visits the beautiful Cotswold village of Rowan Vale on a school trip with her daughter, she is enchanted. It's run as a living museum, with a steam railway, vintage teashop, Elizabethan manor house and old water mill allowing tourists to see history in action.

But there's more to Rowan Vale than meets the eye...

To Callie's surprise, the owner of the village, elderly Sir Lawrence Davenport, requests a meeting with her. It appears Callie has been observed talking to several villagers she shouldn’t be able to see - as they’re ghosts.
Sir Lawrence then makes an astonishing offer: to sell Callie the whole estate for a tiny sum, if she agrees to protect the village’s present tenants and make sure the headstrong ghosts are represented too.

With a spectral lord of the manor and his imperious wife, a naughty 1940s schoolgirl and the man who once taught William Shakespeare among them, it seems Callie’s role as owner wouldn’t be easy.
And that’s without the added complication of Lawrie’s disinherited grandson, the gorgeous Brodie.
Rowan Vale and Callie may need each other. But is this a match made in heaven or hell?

Fans of the BBC's Ghosts will love this heart-warming and magical novel.

My Thoughts

Anyone interested in friendly ghosts (and there are far more friendly ghosts than there are unfriendly ones!) will enjoy this entertaining cosy romance adventure. Yes it's a predictable romance with the formulaic boy/girl misunderstanding attraction to each other but that's the style of the genre. The characters here were all delightful, even the ghosts - well, actually, especially the ghosts!

Callie is on a school trip with her daughter Immie to a historical-themed Cotswold village. When a couple of encounters with over-enthusiastic role-playing actors and locals draw attention to themselves, Callie, as a responsible Mum, feels she has to complain to the estate's manager.

That's when realisation dawns and her world is turned upside down. No spoilers. You'll have to read the book to find out more.

My only disappointment is that Rowen Vale isn't real, I won't be able to visit and I'll not be able to see for myself the model village within the actual village... or the ghosts!

I loved the ghosts. I liked the daughter Immie, but then, she is very much like my own daughter ... who can also see ghosts.

I hope there will be more in this charmingly delightful series. I want to find out what happens next - to Cassie, Immie and the ghosts.

The Coffee Pot Book Club Book Tour of: Viva Violetta & Verdi by Howard Jay Smith

Welcome to my Blog!
Wander through worlds
real and fictional,

and find good books
to enjoy along the way!

About the Book

Book Title: Viva Violetta & Verdi
Author: Howard Jay Smith

Publication Date: January 28th, 2025

Publisher:  Historium Press

Pages: 256

Genre: Historical Fiction

A Love Affair Inspiring the World's Most Unforgettable Operas:

Experience the intense, lifelong love affair between Giuseppe Verdi and Giuseppina Strepponi, the brilliant and seductive soprano who shaped his legacy. As his muse, lover, and wife, Strepponi was the inspiration behind Verdi's most iconic works, including La Traviata and Aida. Her influence was pivotal, as she became the architect of his creative triumphs and the heart of his operatic genius.

Set against the backdrop of Italy's Risorgimento, this sweeping novel intertwines their turbulent relationship with the nation's fierce struggle for independence. Through the heartbreak of three brutal wars, Verdi and Strepponi's passion, betrayal, and artistic ambition come alive, mirroring the era's fiery spirit.

Rich with themes of love, power, food, wine, and unrelenting passion, Viva Violetta & Verdi is an unforgettable exploration of art, resilience, and the enduring bond that transformed both an artist and a nation.

Praise for Violetta & Verdi:

"A stunning, significant book...that is rich, lush and drenched in knowledge. It is nothing less than a gift." - Sheila Weller

"Smith's historic drama embraces universal themes of class and religious persecution, and weaves gorgeous language with an intimate knowledge of Italian food, music, and political hypocrisy that contemporary readers will find irresistible." - Jessica Keener

"Viva Violetta & Verdi is a well-researched love letter to Verdi; fans are sure to love." - Leslie Zemeckis

"Perfection. You are right there, inhaling and breathing in the words, the smell, and each piece of music. Bravo. It is both a love song and a love letter to the irrefutable power of Verdi's muse, Violetta." - Amy Ferris

Viva Violetta & Verdi:

Vienna

Eventually we arrived in Vienna, the capital of the Hapsburg Empire, where Strepponi was to sing at both the Kärntnertor Theater and the Theater an der Wein. Our stage coach delivered us to the depot and livery stable on Kärtnerstrasse, mere blocks from the theaters. Upstairs was the Wilden Mann Gasthaus, where we took several rooms for our entourage. The Gasthaus was the very same hostel that my cousin, Lorenzo Da Ponte, had stayed at some fifty years earlier. Downstairs, occupying one half of the ground floor, was the Café Venezia where Da Ponte had met his future wife, Celestina, who was also its owner. Da Ponte often took his meals there with Mozart when they were writing The Marriage of Figaro. What could be more inspiring than to dine in their shadows in the very café where the music for that first shot of the revolution was composed? And although that might have seemed like ancient history, it was only a decade before we arrived, that Beethoven, yes, the immortal Beethoven himself premiered one of his very last works, his Opus 132 String Quartet in the Café Venezia. Strepponi and I made a point to dine there with her staff as often as possible during our stay, if only to soak in the history and the food – which was nearly as good as that back home at Ca’ Dario. I also made a pilgrimage to the Theater an der Wein where Beethoven lived while composing his only opera Fidelio – one of the few existing operas until Verdi’s that actually spoke of freedom, democracy and of overthrowing corrupted oppressive regimes. For those of us in Giovine Italy, and for Verdi, the politics of Fidelio was a guide star, a precursor to our own uprising.

Though I had obviously never been to Vienna before, I had read Da Ponte’s secret diaries over and over many times before delivering them to Ceneda. The diaries not only described his decade worth of adventures in the city, they also painted in vivid and at times gory details, a picture of about how horribly Jews were treated and abused under the Austrians. They were our oppressors and would remain so until we broke the harness these aristocrats used to constrain us all.

As a city, and the capital of a vast empire, Vienna was a wonderfully beautiful and fascinating place. Nonetheless, I could never feel comfortable there. That discomfort helped me understand why my cousin had used his identity as Catholic priest, as a costume to hide the fact that he was a Hebrew. To do otherwise simply did not feel safe. If you had read Da Ponte’s accounts of how he, along with Mozart and Baron Wetzler, another Converso, visited the underground site of the Vienna Gesera massacre below the modern city’s Judenplatz where in 1421, fourteen hundred Jews were burnt alive, you would understand why this city of smiling, pleasant Austrians terrified me.

Before Strepponi and I began our run of performances in Vienna, I sought out Bartolomeo Merelli at his offices at the Kärntnertor Theater, only to discover that he had returned to Milan weeks earlier. Any thought of having him read through Verdi’s score for Oberto had vanished.

On the other hand, Strepponi once more wooed both the musicians and aristocrats of the capital. At one point she dated the concertmaster of the opera orchestra and then later, Donizetti himself when she did a reprise of her role in his Anna Bolena. On more than one evening I dined alone with our staff while Strepponi was out and about.

There were other times Strepponi would encourage me to date one of her lady friends, typically other singers or chorus members she thought would match up well with me. I’d go out with them, but much like my experiences in America, I considered such affairs a distraction from my goal of finding a true partner to love, marry and have a family with. I appreciated Strepponi looking out for me, but what can I say, these assignations always felt empty.

We performed several operas in Vienna over the next month and though I had great opportunities covering a number of major roles, I was never so glad to leave a city and get back on the road. And so, after Strepponi’s triumph there, our tour resumed at the same breakneck pace across the northern Italian cities.

1580.

Nelan Michaels docks at Plymouth after sailing around the world aboard the Golden Hind. He seeks only to master his mystical powers – the mark of the salamander, that mysterious spirit of fire – and reunite with his beloved Eleanor.

After delivering a message to Francis Walsingham, he’s recruited into the service of the Queen’s spymaster, where his astral abilities help him to predict and thwart future plots against the realm.

But in 1588, the Spanish Armada threatens England’s shores.

So how could the fledgling navy of a small, misty isle on the edge of mainland Europe repulse the greatest fleet in the world?

Was the Queen right when she claimed it was divine intervention, saying, ‘He blew with His winds, and they were scattered!’?

Or was it an entirely different intervention – the extraordinary conjunction of coincidences that Nelan’s astral powers brought to bear on that fateful Midnight of Eights?

read an extract

Extract from the beginning of Chapter 3:
Madima’s Vision
23rd April 1581

He walked through a carpet of bluebells on the slopes of Shooters Hill, just west of Greenwich, with a grand view over the bends in the river Thames. The chapel bells called him to compulsory worship. After intoning the Lord’s Prayer, when the service ended, he trudged across common land on the edge of a village. He grimaced as the acrid smell of death stung his nostrils. There it was, a corpse hanging from a gibbet. The dead man’s flesh had shrunk to his bones. His shoeless feet dangled in the air, his head tilted to one side, and his swollen, dried-up tongue bulged out of his mouth.

To one side of the meadow, a handful of yeomen practised their archery skills. They set their arrows in their yew bows and unleashed them into the air in high, graceful crescents. They stopped shooting when they saw him.

“What brings ya here, lad?” one of them with a scraggly beard asked.

“Lost my beloved. She has these green eyes and curly, auburn hair. A tad taller than me, she goes by the name of Eleanor and travels with a companion, Alexander.”

“Not seen no folks like that,” the man replied.

The one with a pock-marked face must have picked up his slight Flemish twang, because he asked, “You one a’ them foreigners? You a Gyptian?”

“I was born in Picardy in Northern France. What’s a Gyptian?”

“They call ’emselves Children of Ancient Egypt. We call ’em E-gyptians. That’s where they hark from; E-gypt. Some call ‘em Gypsies. Watch out though, there’s a bunch of ’em, three score or more, up there on Shooters Hill.”

“What of it?”

“Them Gyptians be rascals ’n thieves. They settle in a place, then shuffle on here and wander on there. Folks say they worship the Devil ’imself. An’ they read ya palm ’n tell ya fortune. It smells of witchcraft, lad. They’ll slit ya throat as soon as give you a bye your leave.”

“They’re that bad?”

“Yeah, listen to me,” he said, pointing to the hanged man. “That fella over there on Gibbet Field, he was hung just for talkin’ to ’em. It’s agin’ the law a’ Queen Bess herself.”

While the archers collected their arrows, Nelan collected his thoughts. Like Wandering Jews, these Gyptians moved from place to place, and so might have encountered his Eleanor. He loitered in the woods until the archers left, then strode up to the summit of Shooters Hill, where he was greeted by a hound with wild eyes and a bark as sharp as Excalibur.

As he tousled the dog’s mane, a man asked, “What you want with us?” A woman stood next to him.

“You with the Gyptians?” Nelan replied, trying to keep his nerve.

“Who’s askin’?” the man said.

“I’m Nelan.”

“Me is Jasper,” came the reply. His voice was guttural but mellow at the same time. The man’s forehead resembled a ploughed field, each furrow etched from life’s profound experiences. “And this be me’ sis’, Kazia.”

“Greetings, Nelan. What brings you to our camp?” she said, in a voice as soft as a rose petal. Kazia had black hair, an olive complexion, high cheekbones and dark eyes that watched with passion. She was utterly stunning. Nelan puffed out his cheeks and glanced away so as not to offend her by staring.
