When desperation is the only option and courage costs everything
The pot had nothing left to give. Margaret scraped the last of the
congealed oats anyway, the spoon going round and round the cold iron. The fire
had been dead since Tuesday. She stopped looking at the hearth two days since,
the ash piled grey and spent like old rags.
“Mum, you’re up early.” Harriet woke first, as Harriet always did.
She opened her eyes with that look she had, like she’d been awake already,
waiting in the dark. There were times Margaret watched that little face and
felt observed by someone much older than ten, someone who understood the shape
of things and did not question.
“That I am,” Margaret said. “Wake your brother.
About Elizabeth:
Elizabeth St.John’s critically acclaimed historical fiction brings to life the stories of her ancestors—extraordinary women whose close connections to England’s kings and queens offer an intimate perspective on Medieval, Tudor, and Stuart times.
Inspired by family archives and historic residences from Lydiard Park to the
Tower of London, she explores ancestral portraits, diaries, and lost
gardens—and occasionally encounters a ghost. Exploring a whole different family
history in The Gate, Elizabeth expands her storytelling into the early
20th century, adding a new era to her repertoire.
Living between
California, England, and the past, Elizabeth is International Ambassador for
The Friends of Lydiard Park and curator of The Lydiard Archives, where she is
always searching for inspiration for her next novel. Her works include The
Lydiard Chronicles, set during the English Civil War, and The
Godmother’s Secret, exploring the mystery of the princes in the Tower. In The
King’s Intelligencer, set in the court of Charles II, a young woman must
decide what she is willing to risk to reveal the whereabouts of the missing
princes.

Elizabeth! You've ambushed us too with Margaret's story. The close relationship she had with her children, particularly Harriet, went straight to my heart.
ReplyDeleteThanks Patricia - I wanted to say that hope can overcome despair, even when you have nothing left. x
DeleteI've read the story several times now - and still cry at the end!
ReplyDeleteMe too! ;-)
DeleteHeartbreaking and yet hopeful; trauma and reslilence in equal measures. I'm glad you had the courage to write it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marian. It took a while to process and I'm glad I got there.
DeletePerfect! I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Elizabeth’s novels. It stayed with me long after I’d finished reading. Brava! Judith x
ReplyDeleteAh, thanks Judith. Glad you enjoyed spending time with another branch of the fam!
DeleteAgh! Must be the hardest decision a mother can make... That it all left scars is evidenced by what you've told us above about your grandmother. It must have required a lot of courage to face these facts and convert it into such a gem of a story
ReplyDeleteI think simply realising I am here because of her courage and sacrifice made it impossible not to write. x
