It is hard for us Indie Authors to keep up with the demands of marketing our books - hard work for what seems, all too often, not much reward. For myself (and several of my author friends) we don’t expect to sell thousands - or even hundreds, or often (being totally honest), even tens per month. I regard my writing now as a hobby. Something I enjoy doing. I have so many stories I want to tell, so many characters nagging me to write about them (unless it’s a pirate who occasionally disappears with a bottle of rum, leaving me to sort out ‘what happened next’.)

Yes, I want to sell books because to produce books costs money (editing, cover design, formatting, buying an isbn, buying proof copies of the book - you’re looking at anything between £500 to double or treble that. So I’m not in this for profit! It is nice when you see pleasing book sales each month though. (“Gosh! I’ve sold two books! today.")

I do my bit by hosting professional book tours on my Book Blog (The Coffee Pot Book Club and Mary Anne Yarde Book Promotions) but I thought I’d do a bit extra here today - and I have plans for something similar over the autumn and winter.

The following is a super promotion put together by

author Alison Morton. Thanks Alison!

My Thoughts

One of the reasons I so like Tony Riches' historical novels is because he can be trusted to get his facts right - as far as they are known, that is, and within the boundaries of writing - creating - historical fiction. This is quite a sustained achievement over all the books he has produced.

The other reason is that I always finish one of his novels having discovered something I had been previously unaware of. In this instance the main character herself - I had no idea that Queen Anna had even existed! The Stuart King, James VI/I I knew of, of course. That his mother was the ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots - tick, knew that. That he had children: tick, knew that as well. (Charles I, naturally). But it had never occurred to me to even look up the name of his wife, let alone where she had come from or the circumstances of their (dismal!) marriage.

And what an eye-opener this story was! Poor Anna -  I felt so sorry for the poor fourteen-year-old lass ... even sorrier for her as she grew with her loneliness expanding as the years passed. What a brave woman she was!

Mr Riches has a skilled knack of bringing these relatively unknown characters to life. A knack that is a well-honed talent.
