PRAISE FOR MURDER IN MYRTLE BAY
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ms Blackthorn’s ability to put the reader into the story – into the landscape, the buildings her characters inhabit or visit, like the antiques market, the bakery, the nursing home – keeps the reader captivated.

I loved the the road Ruth and Doris travelled to finally unmask the murderer. Doris knew from the beginning the person she loathed most in the world, was involved. I loved how surprised they were, as well as the reader, when the culprit was revealed. Amazon review

 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m usually pretty good at working out whodunnit, but the author had me baffled with this one, and kept me guessing to the end in real Christieesque fashion. An excellent read, and a new lead character worth following. 5 stars without hesitation from me. Goodreads review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The mystery behind the murder kept me guessing till the end. Suspects were plenty and so were red herrings. The events that finally lead to Ruth and Doris coming face-to-face with the killer was no less than a nail-biting scene. Speaking of killer, their identity and the reason for murder was a huge shocker. Unexpected. Goodreads review

My review

I don't know why I thought this cosy mystery was set in the UK (something had made me think Cornwall or Yorkshire?) but what a pleasant surprise to discover I was in the wrong hemisphere, with the setting very much Australian - a nice, unexpected change of reading location for me. (And as it was cold and raining here in England on the afternoon I started reading, the 'virtual sunshine' was a much appreciated bonus.)

I discovered plenty of red herrings, a host of suspects who bore different grudges, possible motives, secrets and resentments to be revealed and unravelled ... I didn't guess 'whodunit' until the end. I did guess where the murder itself would be, so finding the body wasn't a surprise, (but that didn't matter in the slightest,) I'll not say more for fear of giving away spoilers.

I liked our two main 'sleuths', Ruth and Doris,  a clever touch by the author to have one young and one much older. They balanced each other and worked well together, both as believable characters and from a writing technique perspective. There were some good touches of humour dotted here and there. (Difficult elderly relatives ... most of us have been there!)

The location - and the food (there's lots of food) - was skilfully described, taking the reader firmly into the story as if watching what was happening through a hidden camera. I do wonder if some descriptive scenes were a little overdone, resulting in slowing the action slightly, but not enough to spoil this reader's enjoyment.

Murder In Myrtle Bay should please fans of the light read cosy (cozy: US spelling) mystery: a good plot, likeable (and unlikable!) characters, well written and entertaining.

A good start to what promises to be a good series.

About the Book
A knight sworn to keep a family secret.

A king who seeks revenge.
A daring plan to save one life…or condemn many.

England 1216AD. Sir Robert Fitzwilliam faithfully serves the English crown, but when the outlaw Allan a Dale, a childhood friend, is captured and thrown in the sheriff’s dungeons beneath Nottingham Castle, trouble is certain to follow.

Allan’s days are numbered. Nothing would please King John more than to see an old nemesis hanged. Nothing except watching Robert’s estranged father, Robin, dangling dead from a rope beside him.

When his father joins forces with the Hood gang to rescue Allan, enlisting the aid of friends and even the girl he loves, Robert must decide where his loyalties lie.

TALES OF ROBIN HOOD

Before there was Robin Hood, there was Allan of the Hood. You know their story – in Sherwood Forest, they rob from the rich and give to the poor. Rogue is a retelling of the origins of the Robin Hood legends set during a time of a rebellion and invasion near the end of King John’s reign. It’s a thrilling adventure of loyalty, love, sacrifice, spies, and intrigue.

Read An Excerpt

Enjoy this excerpt from Chapter 7 of Rogue, wherein Marian does not want Robin to go to Nottingham to rescue Allan…

“This is not your problem.” Marian had faced Robin, the brush she’d been combing her hair with held stiffly in her lap. She sat very still, listening, letting him explain before she’d spoken. “Allan chose this life. He knew it might end badly. But you…you chose us, Robin. Please—”

He knelt at her feet, put the brush aside, and clasped her hands. “Allan has helped thousands. What have I done?”

“Are you saying it was a mistake to marry me, to come to York?” Marian’s words were sharp, but her voice wasn’t harsh. He could never escape that she knew him too well. “You’d rather live in the forest as an outlaw.”

“I would not miss a day of the years we’ve had.” He saw the love in her eyes. “I expect many more. But if I hadn’t found you again, then yes, I would be there. You know that.”

Her face held both love and fear. “I do.” She touched his brow, his temple. Her fingers stroked his cheeks. “I don’t want you to go. We lost so many years together.”

Robin kissed her hand. He could never recapture those times and would never forget how he’d left Marian without a word. He didn’t know she was expecting their son. He hadn’t known about Robert until the boy was nine summers and he was thousands of miles away serving King Richard on the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

“How will you feel if Little John’s message has come too late? Allan may already be hanging from a gibbet,” she said. “Or his head on a spike.”

Marian knew Allan, and Robin could see how painful those words were for her to say. He had to believe they weren’t true.

“He is alive and in the dungeons. There are tunnels beneath the castle—some only Allan knows. Henry and Stephan, or Tuck, will know a way to get me inside to see Allan.” To get him out.

“Lord Henry? Why would he…? His last letter…”

Robin gave her a rueful half smile. “They have been working in Sherwood with Allan’s gang.”

“Working?” Marian stood abruptly and paced to the window. “Robbing people. No better than thieves.”

“They give near all they take to folks who would starve without their help.”

“Thieves,” she repeated. “Dear God, does Lady Bea know?”

Robin shook his head. He had urged Henry to tell his sister, but Henry didn’t want her to worry. His letters were short, infrequent and had words like We are thinking of pilgrimage to Rome.

“I suppose that’s a good thing,” Marian said. “Better than knowing he lives in the forest and robs innocent people. Stealing is a sin.”

Robin pulled her close. “Thou shalt not steal seems to matter little to Henry when the Church tells him there is a place in Hell waiting for him and Stephan.” He kissed the top of her head. “I love you, wife.”

Marian sighed, cradling her head against his chest. “Stay. You cannot do anything to help Allan now.”

“I can succor him. Is that not enough?” Robin stroked her hair. “I want him to know in his heart that we have not forgotten him.” There will be a way to get him out of the dungeon. His last walk will not be to the gallows.

“Write to him. Little John can deliver your message.” She looked up at Robin. “Which he already offered, and you said, ‘No, it would not be right’. I know. I just… If the sheriff’s men discover you are in Nottingham, they will put you in that cell with Allan.”

Robin tapped her nose, and then tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “They won’t recognize me.”

Marian cupped his face in her hands. “There are lines on your cheeks and at your eyes, but those eyes are as blue as the first day you kissed me. You still have those dimples when you smile—”

“I’ll be sure not to smile then.”

She batted his arm. “And a rosebud curl when your mouth is closed.” Her eyes lit mischievously, and she added, “Which isn’t often.”

Robin laughed. “Are you saying I talk too much?”

Her finger on his lips silenced him. She slid her hand behind his neck and pulled him down to meet her in a kiss.

Marian felt like silk in his hands, soft as the first day he had made love to her. She fit perfectly in his embrace. He could still picture her in their secret spot along the stream near their childhood homes, the joy of their bodies becoming one.

Robin gasped. Marian had reached between them.

“Keep that up and we may get little sleep tonight,” Robin said between breathless kisses, “but I still must leave on the morrow.”

“You leave me and your own children to risk your life to comfort Allan.”

Robin’s arms tightened around her. “I will do everything I can to keep safe.” He stroked her hair again. “Lucy and Richard will be here for you.”

Richard. He was fifteen. He couldn’t stay here forever. And Marian knew that. Their youngest son would leave, just as Robert had. Their rank demanded it. Richard had trained for knighthood since he first sat atop a horse. It was time they let him go, that he could become the man they knew he could be.

A smile curled Robin’s lips. Perhaps his other news would make this less painful. “Robert is in Nottingham, part of the sheriff’s troop at the castle.”

Speechless, Marian pulled away from him. She bit her lip, then exhaled softly. “I have missed him.”

“So have I.”

“Despite your arguments?” she asked.

Robin nodded. It had been hard on Marian to watch their oldest son’s irritation with him. It was almost a relief that he hadn’t returned, though Robin’s letters encouraged him to come home. How many times…how many ways could he say he was sorry?

Robert had never forgiven him for letting Marian think he was dead all those years, for the lies she was forced to tell. Concealing that she was with child, lying about marriage and being widowed.

He stepped toward Marian, but she whirled around and leaned on the window embrasure.

“There are times I wish you had stayed a carpenter’s son.”

Robin turned his palms up. “This is who I am, the man you took as husband.” He had spent too much of his youth loosing arrows and had little skill with awl and chisel. His father’s fault. If he hadn’t made him the best bow in England, Robin wouldn’t have won the silver that allowed him to buy a horse. That victory led to his service to King Richard.

Marian folded her arms across her breasts. She shifted, but even in the shadows her face was hard. “You should pack what you need, and check with cook—”

“That’s done.” There would be fresh loaves of bread in the morning and plenty of dried meat and some cheese for their journey south.

He pressed his lips to Marian’s hand. He wanted a quiet night with her curled up in his arms. He looked into her eyes, hoping to see that she needed him as much as he wanted her.

“I am still angry,” she said.

“You’re frightened,” he replied, brushing his thumb across her cheek.

“Robin…”

He kissed her, gently. And when she broke into tears and sobbed against his chest he held her close.

"Under the Emerald Sky reaches another level in storytelling, the kind where the characters remain with you long after you have closed the book." – The Historical Fiction Company

It’s 1843 and the Englishman Quinton Williams has come to Ireland to oversee the running of his father’s ailing estate and escape his painful past. There he meets the Irishwoman Alannah O’Neill, whose family is one of few to have retained ownership of their land, the rest having been supplanted by the English over the course of the country's bloody history. Seeing the injustices of Victorian Ireland, Alannah’s brother Kieran has learned to hate the English and imperialism. Aware of Kieran’s hostility towards the English, Alannah keeps her growing relationship with Quin a secret – but it's a secret that can't be kept for long from those plotting to end England’s oppression of the Irish people. As Quin and Alannah seek happiness in the face of hate and revenge, an action-packed romance ensues.

If you knew the fate of the Princes in the Tower, would you tell? Or forever keep the secret?

May 1483: The Tower of London. When King Edward IV dies and Lady Elysabeth Scrope delivers her young godson, Edward V, into the Tower of London to prepare for his coronation, she is engulfed in political turmoil. Within months, the prince and his brother have disappeared, Richard III is declared king, and Elysabeth’s sister Margaret Beaufort conspires with her son Henry Tudor to invade England and claim the throne.

Desperate to protect her godson, Elysabeth battles the intrigue, betrayal, and power of the last medieval court, defying her Yorkist husband and her Lancastrian sister under her godmother’s sacred oath to keep Prince Edward safe. Bound by blood and rent by honour, Elysabeth is torn between King Richard and Margaret Beaufort, knowing that if her loyalty is questioned, she is in peril of losing everything—including her life.

Were the princes murdered by their uncle, Richard III? Did Margaret Beaufort mastermind their disappearance to usher in the Tudor dynasty? Or did the young boys vanish for their own safety? Of anyone at the royal court, Elysabeth has the most to lose–and the most to gain–by keeping secret the fate of the Princes in the Tower.

Inspired by England’s most enduring historical mystery, Elizabeth St.John blends her family history with known facts and centuries of speculation to create an intriguing story about what happened to the Princes in the Tower.

Read A Snippet

Spring 1483 | The Palace of The Tower

Racing cloud shadows scamper across the hall as Ned is escorted into the royal apartments. Gloucester places a hand on my boy’s back, urging him forward. They vanish behind the great iron doors, Ned’s fair head gleaming golden in a final shaft of sunlight as he disappears.

I let out my breath with a shudder. My vow is fulfilled. I have done my duty. The succession is secured. I bid a silent farewell to my boy, not just from this journey, but to his youth and his unique time with me as his godmother. I swallow a lump in my throat, am determined to be brave. Margaret is the most devoted mother to her own child; she has navigated the roughest of waters for Henry, through war and treachery, long absences and sad farewells. Margaret knows how to prepare Ned for the throne.

After all, she once considered her own son a candidate.

I repeat my prayer to King Edward in heaven.

God rest your soul and know that your son is safely delivered. I have kept my vow and carried out your wish.

Doors slam shut. Bolts rattle into place.

And God protect my boy, give him strength to rule with honour, to take counsel from those whom he trusts and avoid those who might betray him.

My eyes snap open. What demon of doubt scribed that prayer?

A faint call from far above. There, at an upper gallery, Ned's pale face appears. He gestures for me to join him.

He needs me still. My heart lifts. I walk swiftly to the door, happiness springing in my heels. I'm coming, my darling.

The guards bar the way. Soldiers appear in each corner, at every door, double, triple deep. Their livery is a worryingly familiar black and red.

“I'm sorry, Lady Scrope. We have instructions not to let anyone through now.” The guard is apologetic, embarrassed even. He witnessed our triumphant arrival just minutes before.

“On whose orders?” Surely there is a mistake.

“The Duke of Buckingham.”

I stare up at Ned in the gallery. Harry looms at his side, steers him away from the rail. Ned clings to the edge for a moment, lifts his hand briefly, and then pulls a rueful face as he is led away.

“And so not even his godmother is allowed to enter?”

The guard shakes his head. “Best be going home, Lady Scrope.” He changes from kindly to distant. “Best leave.”

A flush of anger heats my cheeks. “As biddable as a bitch in whelp.”

Harry used me as a mounting block on his swift ride to power. I must share this truth with Margaret, warn her to be wary of his ambition. Tomorrow. When Margaret visits Le Ryall and we talk about Ned’s dreams for his future, the need to visit the queen in Sanctuary and reconcile the family.

Taking one last look at where Ned stood, I gather my skirts. Let Margaret deal with Harry tonight. I do not want to leave, but it is time to go home. Jack will be at Le Ryall shortly. I long to share my journey with him, talk with my beloved, who knows me better than any, who will put my scattered feelings into perspective.

The guards move forward, and I realise I am being escorted from the dais. Surely just a formality. I am spent, the emotion of the last week draining me.

Don’t falter, don’t fall.

My old creed from sanctuary bubbles up unbidden, and my footsteps echo through the cavernous hall as I leave my prince in the Tower.

 About the Author

Elizabeth St.John’s critically acclaimed historical fiction novels tell the stories of her ancestors: extraordinary women whose intriguing kinship with England's kings and queens brings an intimately unique perspective to Medieval, Tudor, and Stuart times.

Inspired by family archives and residences from Lydiard Park to the Tower of London, Elizabeth spends much of her time exploring ancestral portraits, diaries, and lost gardens. And encountering the occasional ghost. But that’s another story.

Living between California, England, and the past, Elizabeth is the International Ambassador for The Friends of Lydiard Park, an English charity dedicated to conserving and enhancing this beautiful centuries-old country house and park. As a curator for The Lydiard Archives, she is constantly looking for an undiscovered treasure to inspire her next novel.

Elizabeth's books include her trilogy, The Lydiard Chronicles, set in 17th Century England during the Civil War, and her newest release, The Godmother's Secret, which explores the medieval mystery of the missing Princes in the Tower of London.
