Why I wrote it

All my novels are different in style, genre, and the way I
prepare for them. I like a challenge and want my new characters to be nothing
like my previous ones.
So Cooee Baby was bound to be different again. I was drawn
towards writing a novel about a female character who is strong but flawed. I decided that my dominant lead should have
Asperger’s Syndrome, not as an affliction, but to amplify her powerful but
narrow talents. I wanted something
life-changing to happen to her which, although frightening, would make her draw
on those strengths to pull her through.
Very slightly, I was inspired by Lisbeth Salander in Stieg
Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy and by Saga Noren in The Bridge. Both are gifted
but have eccentricities which can be both disruptive and comical.
What’s it about?
Awhina Fernandez is a young scientist at Cambridge University
with a potentially brilliant career ahead of her. She has a strong sense of
humour but the social skills of a rhinoceros. She has difficulty making
friends, publicly lampoons her professor, and quarrels with her mother. But her
talents are starting to be recognised by the scientific community.
After an on-off relationship with an older man on the other
side of the world, she does something stupid which results in a horrendous
accident. That takes her into a remote and terrifying environment. Her natural
defiance makes her play badass, which is risky. Her adventures take her on a
journey which could lead her to a glamorous new career, but does she want it?
Cooee Baby is a psychological work of fiction, with elements
of a thriller.

How I wrote it
Cooee Baby has eleven parts. All but two of them are narrated by Awhina herself. When the second most important character, Rachel, appears two thirds of the way through, I use a technique which I employed in my second novel, The Corncrake. Narration is batted back and forth between the two characters in rapid succession, without announcing who is narrating. That is done by a variety of techniques, the most important being the characters’ unique “voices”. This enables the reader to understand immediately what each character is thinking, without third party narrator intrusion. It is particularly useful for revealing misunderstandings.
