What inspired me to write Unlike Any Other

The story of Bathsheba Spooner is well-known in the Central Massachusetts area. I live ten minutes from where the murder happened. I grew up in Worcester where much of the story takes place. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the small town where Bathsheba grew up, where her father had a large estate. I knew the locations well so they story came to me quite naturally.

This part of Massachusetts is steeped in history. The story is a local legend that has been fascinating people for 244 years. I asked myself why that is. The answer I came up with is that it’s because of so many unanswered questions, things we don’t know and never will. The historical facts are full of riddles and questions. Many conspiracy theories have been put forth but no one knows, or will ever know, the answers.

I thought of the story in terms of the modern day. Imagine a story of a smart, beautiful, seductive, daughter of a wealthy and powerful man who comes to hate her husband because he’s been cheating on her. She persuades two ex-soldiers and a 16 year old to murder her husband. After they are tried and convicted she announces she’s pregnant with the 16 year old’s child. And her dead husband’s step brother is one of the men determining their execution date. Who wouldn’t want to read that? We’d all watch that movie.

Another thing that inspired me is that while there have been a couple of nonfiction books written about Bathsheba, and two historical fiction books, there wasn’t a real good story about it. No writer had told the story in the way I envisioned it. It rolled around in my head for a while before I got glimpses into how it should be written. The story hadn’t been brought it to life, to put the reader in the story, to make them see, hear, feel, taste, and smell just as the characters do. That was my challenge and I accepted it. My goal in writing a story is for the reader to forget that they are reading. If they realize they’re reading, I’ve failed as a writer. I focus on the basic human emotions, things that every person on earth experiences, those things we share regardless of race, religion, political beliefs or where we live.

I initially wrote it in the third person and thought it was a great story until a couple of agents told me that it would be better if I rewrote it in the first person. That was an interesting and time consuming process. But, it was worthwhile. Seeing it all from Bathsheba’s point of view made it much more powerful.

Another thing that inspired me to write the book is that, like a lot of things these days, people hear or read one little bit of fact and weave a whole story out of it and of course, it’s mostly wrong, a heaping pile of conjecture. The number of people who told me things about Bathsheba’s story that were so far from the actual historical record, exasperated me so I sat down and put it all on paper.

The Story of An 18th Century Woman from A Prominent New England Family Who Went from A Life of Privilege to The Gallows

Bathsheba Spooner was the daughter of Timothy Ruggles, a general in the French and Indian War, president of the Stamp Act Congress, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, and a leading loyalist in Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War; the epitome of upper class.

Like her father, Bathsheba was smart, strong-willed, and a staunch British loyalist. Forced to marry a man she did not love, Bathsheba withstood her husband’s abuse for years until a young Continental soldier entered her life. But when this well-heeled mother of three small children discovered she was pregnant with the soldier’s child, her thoughts quickly turned to murder.

Based on a true story, the events that follow Bathsheba’s life, her decisions, and her ultimate demise will show readers that Bathsheba Spooner was, in fact, Unlike Any Other . . .
