LIES THAT BLIND
BY
E.S. ALEXANDER IS A
What if the only way to secure your legacy is through deceit?
Malaya, 1788:
Aspiring journalist Jim Lloyd jeopardises his future in ways he never imagined. Risking his wealthy father’s wrath, Jim decides to ride the coat-tails of Captain Francis Light, an adventurer governing the East India Company’s new trading settlement on Penang. As Light’s assistant, Jim hopes that by chronicling his employer’s achievements they will both enjoy enduring fame. But years of deception and double-dealing by Light have strained relations between Jim’s new employer and Penang’s legal owner, Sultan Abdullah of Queda.
Tensions mount: Pirate activity escalates, traders complain about Light’s monopolies, and inhabitants threaten to flee, fearing a battle the tiny settlement cannot hope to win against tens of thousands of marauding Malay mercenaries.
To his horror, Jim realises that a shared obsession with renown has brought him and Light perilously close to infamy, threatening not only both their names and reputations but the lives of thousands of innocent island inhabitants.
Yet Jim cannot leave Penang because of his dedication to Light’s young son, and his perplexing attraction to a mercurial Dutchman. He must stay and confront his own misguided ambitions as well as help save the legacy of a man he has come to despise.
