When children she knows vanish mysteriously, Theo confronts Inspecteur Michel Devaux who suspects the Revenants are involved. Theo refuses to believe the killer could be a friend—could be the man she loves. Classic detection and occult revelation lead Michel and Theo through the dark underbelly of Paris, from catacombs to asylums, to the obscene ritual of a Black Mass.
Following the maze of clues they discover the murderer believes he is the reincarnation of the most evil serial killer in the history of France—Gilles de Rais. Once Joan of Arc’s lieutenant, after her death he plunged into an orgy of evil. The Church burned him at the stake for heresy, sorcery, and the depraved murder of hundreds of peasant children.
Whether deranged mind or demonic passion incite him, the killer must be found before he strikes again.

The Evidence of the Tarot Cards –
Floats the Dark Shadow
Inspecteur Devaux leaned forward. The
coldness thawed and his voice was quiet but earnest. “Listen to me,
Mademoiselle Faraday. Some monsters cannot hide what they are, but others are
quite adept at appearing human. They are like the character in that English
novel—the story of Jekyll and Hyde. But it is not some fantastic potion which
releases the monster within them. Their own lust provides the chemistry.”
Theo shook her head, but she knew he was
right. As if they were auditioning for a play, her friends appeared in her mind
in a Jekyll and Hyde transformation, their faces turning lecherous and cruel.
Violent. Demonic—the evil Devil of the Tarot.
“Inspecteur Devaux…” Theo hesitated. He
waited. Sometimes his stillness could be so unnerving. “You will think I am
crazy.”
“I doubt that.”
“When I was at the Charity Bazaar with
Mélanie, a friend told her fortune with three Tarot cards.” He sneered a
little, the slightest quiver of his upper lip, but she forged ahead. “She
predicted the fire.”
He frowned. “We know it was an accident.
She could not have been involved.”
“Of course not,” Theo said. “I never
implied that she was.”
“You think she foretold the fire?” His
face became a total blank which was better than him laughing in her face. He
had enough courtesy or curiosity to ask, “What were the cards?”
“Carmine laid out three. The first was The
Tower.” That probably meant nothing to him. “The image is a tower struck by
lightning, surrounded by flames and people fleeing. It was upside down. Carmine
said that meant that Mélanie might be trapped by some catastrophe. The second
card also foretold her being trapped. Its element was fire.”
When Theo paused, he looked at her
expectantly. “And the third?”
She knew it was melodramatic. It was also
horribly painful. “The last card was Death.”
The Inspecteur frowned. He spoke very
reluctantly. “That does not seem like the sort of reading you would give a
friend or even a customer.”
“A fake would arrange visions of love on
the horizon, or wealth, or something else pleasant and amusing. Or if the
person was unhappy about something, there would be a promise that all would be
better soon. At worst, a fake would give a mysterious warning, not a threat of
death.”
“Perhaps they were not truly friends?” he
suggested.
“Carmine liked Mélanie. She believes in
the Tarot.”
“And you do as well?”
“I would rather not believe, but now I
do.”
“What happened to this Carmine during the
fire?”
“She left before it began.”
He actually looked suspicious again.
“Carmine was frightened. She’d gotten the
same card herself that morning.”
Michel shook his head. “Has this Carmine
laid out the Tarot cards for you as well?”
Theo felt a weird mix of reluctance and
amusement. “Yes. I think perhaps it was true as well. The cards said I would be
in a battle of good and evil.”
Again a look of blank disbelief. “Indeed?”
Theo enjoyed trying to perturb him. “I
think that you were represented as well—as a knight who would be involved in
the same battle but would disagree with me.”
A smile flashed briefly across his face.
“A knight?”
“The Knight of Swords.” She saw the card
again, the charging knight in his shining black armor with a windswept plume on
his helmet and upraised sword.
“That seems appropriate.” He smiled once
again. It lasted a second, then vanished utterly. “Did the Tarot reveal the
killer?” he asked sardonically.
“The Tarot thinks the killer is in league
with The Devil,” she answered.
“I think we can all agree on that, if only
symbolically. Do you have his name?”
“No.” Amusement flipped to annoyance. She
most certainly would not mention the poetic Page of Cups. She pursued her other
idea. “Carmine has some friends who have studied the occult, the Mathers. If
the killer’s cross has some deeper meaning, perhaps they will recognize it.”
“You should not involve yourself in such a
dangerous enterprise.” His voice hardened.
“Yet only the other day, you told me I
must have courage.”
“And now I tell you not to be foolhardy.
Searching out sinister black magicians—” he began.
“Not all occultists practice black magic.”
Theo wished now she had not revealed their names. “Her friends are scholars.
Surely not everyone in Paris is suspect?”
“Until they are cleared, yes.” There was
only the faintest lift of an eyebrow to lighten the statement. Then his voice
hardened into a command. “I have my own source for this information,
mademoiselle. Do not interfere further.”
He could not command her obedience. Angry
again, Theo stood. “I will continue to investigate. If I learn anything of
interest from my interference, I will let you know.”
She made it to the door before he said,
“Mlle. Faraday.”
She turned, reluctant to argue further,
but he only added, “Please—be cautious.”
His voice was cool, but there was true concern in his eyes. Her emotions went topsy-turvy again, and she smiled with amusement. “Do not fear, Inspecteur Devaux. I will call for you—if I have need of a knight.”
