The protagonist, Juni, grew up with her grandparents. She never knew who her father was, and her mother died when Juni was still a baby. Now as an adult, the loss of her parents and not knowing what really happened comes to the surface. Believing she can protect herself from further pain, she chooses a life of solitude with only her dog as a companion—away from the things that remind her of family, away from the grandmother she loves.

With this in mind, I want to set the scene for an excerpt from the book. It’s a week before Christmas, and Juni has arrived at her grandmother’s old cabin in the mountains. She wants to spend a few days there to finish an article for a newspaper. The cottage is filled with memories from Juni’s childhood. These memories will slowly change her outlook on life.

Excerpt:
A chest sat in the bedroom corner. She opened it to see if it might contain any more Christmas paraphernalia to trigger her slumbering muse. But there was nothing there to remind her of the holidays. Old photographs of hikes and books about birds and animals in the mountains. Pa’s harmonica and reading glasses. Mo’s thimble collection.

Juni flipped through a journal. Stories written in beautiful handwriting, precise and elegant letters filled the pages. She thumbed back to the front and read the introductory lines. Elise’s Tales of Life. Juni gasped and covered her mouth. This diary had belonged to her mother. Why had she never seen it before?

There were poems and stories. Some were longer, others only a few sentences. Juni brought the book to her writing space at the table and started reading. Her mother had a God-given talent. The poetry was lovely, and the verses tugged on strings in Juni’s heart she did not even know existed. Her mother’s love for the written word seemed to match her own.

The last story in the book held an intriguing title. The Boy and the Magpie. Juni brought the journal to the couch, pulled her legs up, wrapped a blanket around her shoulders, and started reading.

So, welcome to Fair Mountain. Come laugh and cry with Juni and her dog, Leo. Meet the handsome Henry Norheim, and be swept up in the nostalgic, sweet feelings of the season.
Merry Christmas to you wherever you are.

Nostalgia and Christmas miracles burn bright in this uplifting and heartwarming story about new beginnings and falling in love under a blanket of stars.

Fair Mountain, December 1972.
A few days before Christmas, Juni’s editor gives her a writing assignment that throws her far outside her comfort zone. She and her terrier, Leo, retreat to her grandparents’ old cabin in the Norwegian mountains in hopes of inspiration. But the trip turns into a heart-wrenching and emotionally challenging encounter.

Memories of Juni’s childhood seep in as soon as she enters the cabin, and as for the writ-ing assignment…what does she know about what children need for Christmas?

Juni’s focus changes when handsome Henry Norheim from Moose Lodge down the hill unexpectedly shows up outside her cottage door. His dedication to family, traditions, and Christmas celebration is contagious, but for Juni, coming out of her lonely shell is easier said than done.

As Juni’s deadline draws closer, and the snowflakes softly swirl down on Fair Mountain, she has to face up to her past, open her heart, and dare to take a step forward.
Will the miracle of Christmas live up to its promise of hope, goodwill, and love this year?
