Charlotta strode down the broad corridor leading to the grand master’s great
receiving hall, sweeping past guards and other attendants with barely a glance,
her mind fixed on the challenge ahead.

She halted in
front of the double doors and drew in a long breath. Her translator, Estelle de
Montavon, leaned close.
“You are the queen
of Cyprus.” The Frenchwoman’s calm voice was reassuring, as always. “The
