Gregory Hardiman....
I’m not given to talking about myself, as I think a man’s actions are more important than his words. But I suppose it cannot hurt to explain a little.
My name is Gregory Hardiman – hardy by name, hardy by nature as my father (a tough farmer) always had it. I live now in Cambridge, England, not all that far really from the place of my birth in Norfolk, but in between times I have seen plenty of the world – first fighting Boney in Spain, then guarding convicts in Australia (a God-forsaken land I hope never to visit again). I have witnessed enough of man’s cruelty, and now I prefer to spend my time with horses, working as I do as an ostler at one of Cambridge’s finest inns. (The innkeeper William Bird would have me say that.)
But last year, after the passing of the 1825 law, I was asked to take on another role, as one of the new University constables in town. In short, we’ve to patrol town in the evenings and make sure that the undergraduates are back in their colleges before the gates are locked – as you can imagine, some are more willing than others to leave their drinks and return to their books.
A wife? Not at present, no – and with this scar on my face, unlikely in the future either. But I have friends and – I hope – those who respect me, and with the wide fens and open sky on my doorstep, I am not lonely.
