Doubling Up on Murder Mystery Week with Alison Morton

Today... Alison Morton
and her exciting new mystery novel!

Double Stakes by Alison Morton

A kidnapped daughter. A rigged election. A family under siege.

French special forces analyst Mélisende’s recovery after a brutal mission is shattered when unknown thugs attack her family home. Enforcers are coming after her sister-in-law for gambling debt.

But Mel is ordered to Germany, where chancellor candidate Achim Nessler’s daughter has been abducted. The kidnappers’ goal? To force Nessler to throw the election, paving the way for a hard-right victory that could upend not just Germany, but all of Europe.

Time’s running out. Mel and fellow investigator Jeff McCracken plunge into a web of extremist politics, where betrayal runs deep and where Mel uncovers a chilling link to her own family’s troubles.

With both a nation’s future and her loved ones in danger, she races to stop a conspiracy that’s far too close to home.

Double Stakes is out for pre-order now! (Available mid-May)

Double Stakes is the third in the fast-paced Doubles series of thrillers featuring Mel/Mélisende des Pittones, a half-French, half British intelligence analyst on secondment from the French Army. Her partner Jeff McCracken is an ex-inspector from the London Metropolitan Police.

Their first meeting in Double Identity around the murder of Mel’s fiancé was – to say the least – bruising.

My thoughts

With any series it can be a challenge for any author to keep the 'giddy up' interest going for the reader - the plot, the action, the interest in the characters: who they are, what they do - will the reader care anyway?

No such problem for Ms Morton! I found this, the third in her  Mélisende series, to be just as engrossing as the first two, possibly even more so because the topic of the plot was interconnected with the political motivations of today - which made me think about real events alongside the fictional ones in this excitingly paced novel.

I will mention that I read an ARC edition while waiting on a hospital day ward for an intended hip replacement - which by 5pm was unfortunately cancelled due to other emergency needs, but I was so absorbed in Ms Morton's story that I was totally distracted! (Hip op now done and a successes!)

Is it a standalone read? Probably, yes, but as with all good things it might be best to start at the beginning in order to enjoy the characters in full.
Now looking forward to the fourth 'adventure'...
***** 5 stars
