About the Book
Warriors of Iron

During Britannia’s tribal age only the strongest prevail…

Britain AD541

Seeress Meddi has been restored to her rightful position of influence within the Eorlingas tribe. But a heavy cloud hangs over the tribe’s survival with the escape of the treacherous Elen who seeks to exact a bloody vengeance following Meddi’s reinstatement and her downfall.

Meddi knows Elen will return to settle the blood feud and the tribe must be ready to face this deadly threat with iron. They must toil day and night to harness the power of the lost magiks to make the weapons needed to overpower Elen.

Meanwhile, Wærmund, a warrior of Saxon descent, has escaped his enforced captivity and vows vengeance against his captors. He too hungers for the promise of sharp blades and travels West to find those who can fashion iron into blades sharp enough to kill. But when a lone woman befriends the band of warriors, promising him even more than that, he’s beguiled by her tale of deceit amongst her own tribe, so reminiscent of his own.

Unbeknown, Meddi and Wærmund share a common enemy and one who is just as belligerent as they are…

Author Bio –

MJ Porter is the author of many historical novels set predominantly in Seventh to Eleventh-Century England, and in Viking Age Denmark. Raised in the shadow of a building that was believed to house the bones of long-dead Kings of Mercia, meant that the author's writing destiny was set.

my thoughts

An interesting and entertaining read, with some well-drawn likeable (and some unlikeable!) characters all of whom came very vividly alive, despite the occasion unfamiliar names of people and places from the sixth century. (Always the difficulty for writers using non-contemporary English language!)

There is a lot in the mixture for this novel: survival, friendship, rivalry, trust and mistrust alongside courage and the horrors of battle during this upheaval of post-Roman Britain when the Romans had left the British people to their own defence against the coming of the Anglo-Saxons. (Mass migration by boat across the English Channel is nothing new!) This was a period of history still commonly called 'the Dark Ages' - not necessarily for the widespread disruption and uneasy conflict, but for the rapid loss of everyday skills - pottery, glassmaking ... iron smelting.

We know so little of fact for the 400-600s for almost nothing was written down (apart from the writing of a few monks, who were biased in their opinions and beliefs) so Ms Porter has achieved a creditable account of how the people of these years lived, loved, worked and fought - and survived. The skill, for writers of this era, is to get those few little-known facts right and believably blend in the made-up imagined bits. Ms Porter does this very well.

This is the second of a trilogy, a stand-alone but I'd suggest starting at the beginning in order to clearly meet the characters and setting.
