One of my favourite things about writing is using the book title in the story somehow. Here we find Lucy being comforted by Jean Blume who appeared in A Little in Love (the first in the series) after an argument with Max at a party.
‘Are you okay, my lovely?’ The soft voice of Jean
Blume found Lucy in a glorious side room that now served as the female toilets.
Originally a small sitting room that allowed guests a breather from the
ballroom, it was decorated in floral paper, sensitive to its historical past,
and the bay window, with its cushioned seat, was left to allow its modern-day
guests the same opportunity.
‘Oh, Mrs Blume, please go back
and enjoy your party.’ Lucy had been staring out of the window for a good half
an hour.
‘Fiddlesticks,’ she said,
tucking her skirt underneath her as she sat next to Lucy, elegantly crossing
her ankles. ‘Now, what happened to cause such a beautiful face as yours to be
so upset?’
‘It’s all just gone so terribly
wrong.’ Lucy spilled all the details about the past few weeks. Every little
thing came out, and she held nothing back. When it was over, she felt an
immense relief.
‘Here.’ Mrs Blume handed her a
tissue. Lucy took it with a smile and dabbed at her eyes and wiped her nose.
The tissue smelt of flowers. ‘So, what’s really the matter?’
‘I don’t know what you mean?’
Lucy recalled all that she had just said and wondered if Mrs Blume had actually
been listening. ‘I just told you.’
‘Well, you told me a lot of
events and things that have gone wrong, but you haven’t told me, what’s causing
you all this upset.’ Jean took Lucy’s hands. ‘I’ll warrant that it’s something
to do with the young gentleman you arrived with.’
‘Max?’ Jean nodded. ‘No.’ Lucy
had seen the look on Mrs Blume’s face before. It was the one her mum used when
she knew Lucy wasn’t telling the truth. ‘I just don’t know.’ Lucy shrugged. ‘I
feel sick when he’s around and sometimes when he’s not and, goodness me, does
he make me angry sometimes. Like proper angry. But when I think I might be
without him, it’s like someone reached inside me and crushed every part of me.
I’ve never felt like this before. I can’t find the right word to describe how
I’m feeling.’
Mrs Blume paused for a moment. ‘I think you’ll find, my dear,’ she squeezed Lucy’s hand reassuringly, ‘that the word is love.’
