No disrespect to the authors taking part this week - but we're all of 'an advanced age' and several of us have various aches, pains and health issues, but we keep writing and although we might come under the heading 'aging crocks' we've amassed a good bit of writing wisdom and are still very much creative where our author's imagination is concerned.
So, let's meet our first Creative Crock...
Inge H. Borg
Ms. Borg left her native Austria at eighteen to study languages in London, Paris and Moscow. After returning to Vienna, she was transferred by her company to Chicago where she was to stay for one year. Instead, she never left the US, moving to Boston, then New Hampshire and San Diego. There, she became an avid sailor, not in the least due to a handsome skipper with a ship-shape boat. A lot of boating takes place in her “Legends of the Winged Scarab” series.
If asked about “Edward,” she will insist that nothing was taken from real life. It was merely her imagination at work. You decide...
Borg now lives in semi-rural Arkansas (US) with her two rescue cats Mango and Sunny.
EDWARD, Con Extraordinaire
(A small pre-curser volume to this man’s future misdeeds)
Edward is, oh, so very British and a dreamboat of a man, especially to the well-to-do middle-aged ladies he courts. He makes their fantasies come true and their gifts are bestowed upon him freely. Unbeknownst to them, however, the dapper Edward has his own dreams full of deceit and mystery. And still, they believe this conman’s stories, and willingly support him.

Extremely well read, Edward spread a knowledgeable aura about him and professed to know something about everything; mostly about subjects interesting to his lady of the moment. It seemed therefore only proper for him to introduce himself to the only woman traveling first class, reading her book.
That she was past her prime was irrelevant. The handbag looked expensive and emeralds set in thick gold surrounded her short neck. Besides, she had to be somebody—or at least somebody well-to-do—to be traveling first class from Tijuana to Cancun, even if it was on Aero Mexico.
"I prefer Nostradamus myself. Hi, I am Edward Crock.” He smiled and leaned down to her. She was already seated and, because of her five-foot two height, it was at an uncomfortable angle for him to pursue further meaningful conversation. He added “May I,” which was more of a necessity than a request.
Lucinda closed her Edgar Cayce book and wondered where he had come from and if he had really just introduced himself as Edward Crook. One of her mother’s favorite Latin sayings flashed through her mind: ‘Nomen est omen,’ meaning ‘the name is an omen.’ Thus forewarned, she muttered a dismissive, “How do you do, Mr. Crook.”
“Actually, it’s Guernsey-Crock.” His smile was slightly pinched as he emphasized the ‘o’ in ‘Crock.’ Then he signaled the thankfully older first-class flight attendant.
When the obliging woman was abreast with him, he whispered something in her ear that made her giggle. Before Lucinda knew what had happened, the man was seated next to her, fresh white pillow behind his head, long legs stretched comfortably as far as the next row allowed. The attendant brought Champagne for two.
For the remainder of the flight, Edward charmed the squat olive-skinned Newport Beach real estate developer with delightful anecdotes about soothsayers and prophets, humbly weaving in snippets from his own charmed life.
So, what's in a name? As Lucinda and others found out often too late, apparently a lot! ...

Note: “Edward” has weaseled his way into Borg’s Legends of the Winged Scarab (Books 2-5). After persuading a California matron to let him accompany her to Egypt (on her dime, of course), he buys himself a pith helmet. In Cairo, he stealthily relieves the gullible Mrs. Betsy Bunting of her credit cards and South Seas pearls, and is ready for new conquests. A chance meeting with Egyptologist Dr. Naunet Klein turns him into her nemesis. Love and charm be damned. There are ancient golden tablets to be had.
1. What was the first novel you read that made you think: ‘Wow, I want to write like this!’
From an early age (after WWII), if nothing else, my one birthday or Christmas gift was always a treasured book-in German, of course. One series (over several years) was the story of a boy being raised by wolves (UONI by Leo Wied). I just Googled it; it’s still available in several languages.
2. If you found a genie in a magic lamp what would your three wishes be?
a) Turn back the time a couple of decades.
b) The means/time to attend the many great writers’ retreats and conferences, especially overseas.
c) Spare me falling for handsome conmen.
3. If you could have a holiday anywhere in the world (for free!) where would you go?
Why, Egypt, of course.
4. Your favorite time period – and why
Ancient Egypt and pre-Minoan Crete (working on the latter)
5. Name one thing you regret that you didn’t do
Starting to write full-time earlier in my life
(without that pesky thing called Work).
